Slovenia is a country in Central Europe that was once part of Yugoslavia.
It consists of four geographical units: the Alps, the Pannonian plain, the Meditteranian and the Dinaric Alps.
Historically, Slovenia is divided into four regions: Carniola, Carinthia, Styria and Istria. In 1918, Prekmurje (literally Over Mura) was added to Slovenia.
The ancestors of today's Slovenes came to the area of Slovenia in the 6th century. Between the 7th and the 10th century, a Slavic principality Carantania existed covering most of today's Slovenia and Austria. In the 11th century, it was annexed to the Holy Roman Empire. Until 1918, it was part of Austria-Hungary and after that a part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In WWII, it was occupated by German, Italian and Hungarian forces and in 1945 liberated by the Yugoslav Partisans. Between 1945 and 1991, it was part of Yugoslavia. Its war of independence was the briefest of the constituent republics of Yugoslavia, lasting just eleven days in 1991. Since then it has joined the EU and in 2007 adopted the Euro and joined the Schengen area.
The current president of Slovenia is Danilo Türk and the prime minister Janez Janša.
Its language, Slovenian, is closely related to Serbo-Croat.
