Mitral regurgitation is the disease affecting the valves of the heart where there is leaking of blood from the left ventricle back into the left atrium. This can occur as result of rheumatic heart disease, myocardial infarction, mitral valve prolapse syndrome, infective endocarditis etc. The diagnosis is made by echocardiography. Other investigations include ECG, chest X-ray and cardiac catheterisation. Mitral stenosis also can co-exist with regurgitation.
Treatment is by surgery usually where the valve is either repaired or replaced. Percutaneous repair is also being evaluated.
