The Republic of Seychelles is an archipelago nation located in the Indian Ocean to the northeast of Madagascar. It gained its independence from the United Kingdom on June 29, 1976, and is a member of the African Union. Its capital and largest city is Victoria. As of December 2007, the president is James Michel, who was elected to a five year term in 2007. [1] Seychelles is 455 km large, which is about 2.5 times the size of Washington, D.C. About 80,000 people live in the nation, 82% of whom are Catholic.
