Anne of Green Gables is a novel of 1908 by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery. Set on Prince Edward Island, Canada, is the tale of Anne Shirley, an orphan girl sent in error for adoption to an elderly brother and sister, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, who had wanted a boy to help on their farm, Green Gables. Anne's life on PEI, as she grew to adulthood, is chronicled in a number of sequels written between 1909 and 1939.
