Admiral Lord Nelson struck down on the deck of HMS Victory at Trafalgar
The Battle of Trafalgar was a naval battle fought during the Napoleonic Wars on October 21, 1805 off the coast of southwestern Spain. It involved the British Royal Navy under the command of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson against the combined forces of France and Spain. The British won the battle decisively when Nelson crossed his opponent's "T". The victory reaffirmed Great Britain's place as the top naval power in the world, and forced Napoleon to abandon his campaign to conquer the British isles. Britain would not be challenged again for control of the seas during the war.
However, the victorious Nelson did not see the fruits of his victory. He was a victim of a musket shot, and did not survive the battle.
