The Preliminary SAT® (PSAT)/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) is a standardized test for American high school juniors administered by the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).[1]
The purpose of the test is to prepare students for the SAT Reasoning Test™ that is the primary exam results used by competitive colleges. The PSAT/NMSQT also has a modest scholarship program for participants.
The PSAT/NMSQT claims to evaluate:
- critical reading skills
- writing skills
- math problem-solving skills
In its scoring system for the purposes of the scholarships, the verbal skills count twice as much as mathematical skills.[Citation Needed] Calculators are allowed on the exam.
