The fact that McCarthy volunteered for the Marines isnt unsubstantial. One of his friends joined the Army, and hinted to McCarthy the recognition that would come with being a war vet. He promptly did. And the way he exxagerated his accomplishments and paraded his "experience" in his early campaigns further supports that point.
