According to biblical literalism, women, like Men, were created by God on the 6th day of Creation, as told in The Book of Genesis. Genesis further elaborates that God took a rib from Adam, the first Man, and from it created Eve, the first woman, as a subservient companion for Adam. Also not explicitly stated in the Bible, it is obvious that, due to the manner in which Eve was created, she was Adam's wife, as God does not intend for two humans in such a union to be any other way.[Citation Needed] Eve caused sin and suffering to come into the world when she tricked Adam into eating from The Tree of Knowledge, an act directly forbidden by God Himself. Saint Paul also has much to say on the status of women in society, most memorably that women should submit to their husbands just as the church submits to God.
The Bible also states that if a man sells his daughter into slavery she must consent and "not go out as the menservants do." (Exodus 21:7)
Some women's organizations like the National Organization of Women disagree with the Bible and argue that they should not have to submit to their husbands, but instead should have "equal" rights.[1] Some Christian churches support this idea.
