Evita was the pet name of Maria Eva Duarte de Peron, better known as Eva Peron (1919-1952), who in 1946 married the Argentinian President Juan Peron.
It is also the title of a musical based on her life story, written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber and first produced (as an album) in 1976. The first stage production was in 1978 and a film of the musical starring Madonna in the title role was released in 1996.
