Wichita is the largest city in Kansas, located in the south-central part of the state in Sedgwick County. The city is named after the Wichita Tribe. Its estimated population as of 2003 was 354,617. [1] The city is home to Wichita State University, and also was the location of the first Pizza Hut. [2]
The Wichita area is represented in the US House of Representatives by Republican Todd Tiahrt, who is from nearby Goddard.
Around the time of World War II, Wichita took off as an aircraft manufacturing mecca, due partly to the efforts of Kansans such as aviation designer Clyde Cessna.
