The "yin" and "yang" are the two forces in Taoist belief that exist in the universe. Both originate from the "Dao" (The Way or Existence), and from the innate balance gave birth to the Three, from which everything originates.

Yin is the dark portion, representing inactive, negative, peaceful, or femaleness.
Yang is the light portion, representing active, positive, sometimes violent maleness.
Both are divided by the line which represents Qi, which is the essence of being.
