Potiphar (or Potifar) (Hebrew: פּוֹטִיפַר ; Egyptian: p-di-p-rʿ ; "the one whom Ra gave") was an Egyptian court official and chief of Pharoah's bodyguard. He was Joseph's master for a time, and was a man of considerable wealth.[1] His title, "court official" translates the Hebrew word sa•ris΄, literally meaning "eunuch", but which in its broader usage meant a chamberlain, courtier or trusted officer of the throne.
When Potiphar's wife tried to seduce Joseph, he resisted the temptation but was accused of the offense anyway and jailed by Potiphar.
