Lilith is the Sumerian fertility goddess (considered to be a demon or succubus in Jewish mythology). She was a goddess of agriculture, motherhood and fertility for both men and women. Often refered to as Lilitu or Lilit and frequently believed to also have been a wind goddess.
In the ben Sira version of the Bible, Lilith is the first wife of Adam (before Eve), and she leaves Eden in a metaphorical version of divorce. This is because she refuses to be subservient and believes that both she and Adam were made from the earth and were equal. After she leaves Eden she is transformed into a succubus and cursed by God to never find love because her kisses suck the life out of mortal men.[Citation Needed]
In Greek legend Lilith is the goddess of the black moon (or the new moon), not to be confused with Artemis the goddess of the full moon or Hecate the goddess of the crescent moon.[Citation Needed]
