Communist president of Chile. he ran several times, failing every time, except for his last run. He followed a Christian Democratic president. During his reign, he almost destroyed the Chilean economy. The media heroically attacked him for his failures. He "nationalized" many industries. [[Augusto Pinochet]] , his trusted general, betrayed him in a coup and became the president of Chile. Salvador Allende killed himself during the coup.[1]
Controversy
Many communist sympathizers claim that the U.S. organized the coup against Allende. Although it is true that the U.S. backed president Pinochet once he got to power, America's involvement has never been proven. From the facts, it looks like the coup was the result of the true anti-Allende sentiment of the Chilean people.
