Jacques Cartier

Jacques Cartier was a Frenchman who set sail in hopes of finding the Northwest Passage and then sailing on to China, once he found the Passage. Jacques Cartier reached North America and sailed past the southern tip of Newfoundland, where he discovered the Gulf of St. Lawrence. During his explorations Jacques Cartier traded with the American Indians he met. Jacques Cartier also claimed land for the French. Jacques Cartier's exploration gave France a claim to Canada and it opened the way for a valuable fur trade between the French and the Indians.

Also, Jacques Cartier is a city in Quebec. Jacques Cartier merged with the city of Longueuil in 1961. The Jacques Cartier bridge conects Montreal to Longueuil.
