The Alabama People's Educational Association was the renamed state section of the Communist Party of the United States of America after that group was reorganized nationally as the Communist Political Association.[1]

Subsequent to the beginning of World War II, communist activity and union organizing increased in the United States, becoming particularly significant after the end of the war. One union organizer and an unabashed supporter of communism, Hosea Hudson, served as the vice president of the Alabama People's Educational Association. Despite being an "outspoken proponent of communism until the end of his life," the City of Birmingham, Alabama proclaimed Hosea Hudson Day to be February 26, 1980.[1] He was also awarded the honorary key to the city. He is considered to have been one of the most prominent African American communist activists and union organizers of his era.[2]
