Al Smith was the dominant Democratic politician in New York State and was elected governor in 1918. He was the Democratic Party's candidate for president in 1928 – the first Catholic to win a major-party presidential nomination – but lost the election to Herbert Hoover.[1]
Smith was a Porgressive in the 1920s, but also a pro-business conservative. He broke with Franklin D. roosevelt after 1928, and helped form the American Liberty League to rally conservative Democrats in opposition to the New Deal and in favor of Jeffersonian Democracy.
