The Wars of the Roses are a series of conflicts in which noble families battled for the throne of England. The wars began as the supporters of the house of Lancaster usurped Richard III and placed the young Henry VI on the throne in 1455. The battles continued until 1480 when Henry VII united the two houses.
The wars are named after the symbols of the two combatants - York used a red rose and Lancaster a white.
