Stephen C. Meyer is an American philosopher of science. Stephen C. Meyer is also director and Senior Fellow of the Center for Science and Culture at the Discovery Institute. [1]
Meyer earned his doctorate in the History and Philosophy of Science from Cambridge University for a dissertation on the history of origin of life biology and the methodology of the historical sciences. In addition, Dr. Meyer worked as a geophysicist with the Atlantic Richfield Company after earning his undergraduate degrees in Geology and Physics. [2] Before taking his current position at the Discovery Insitute, he was an associate professor of philosophy at Whitworth College in Washington.
Intelligent Design
Meyer is a major proponent of intelligent design theory, which he regards as independent of Creationism. [3] In an interview with Ben Wattenberg, Dr. Meyer said,
Intelligent design is an inference from biological data, not a deduction from religious authority. [4]
Peer Review Controversy
In August of 2004, Meyer's article "The Origin of Biological Information and the Higher Taxonomic Categories”, appeared in the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington, making it the first article in support of intelligent design to be published in a peer reviewed journal. [5] Shortly thereafter, the journal's publisher released a statement retracting the article, stating it had not met the journal's scientific standards and had not been properly peer reviewed. [6] The statement also endorsed American Association for the Advancement of Science's resolution that there is no credible scientific evidence supporting ID.
