The Battle of the Denmark Strait was one of history's most famous naval battles. During World War II, the German battleship Bismarck was attempting to break out into the Atlantic Ocean during her first sortie. She was met by the HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales in the Denmark Strait. After some twenty minutes of exchanging salvoes, the Hood, the pride of the British navy, was blown up. The Prince of Wales was badly damaged, and withdrew. The Bismarck would later be pursued by several British ships, and sunk around a week later.
