Speaking in tongues, or glossolalia, is a gift described and explained in Acts 2:1-47 with respect to early Christians.
In this phenomenon, a person is able to speak in a language that he normally does not know.
In Mark 16:17 Jesus Christ states that it will be one of the signs marking those who believe in Him.
Additional Scriptual references can be found in Acts 19:6 and Acts 10:46.
In 1 Cor 12:10 Saint Paul also mentions the experience as one of the gifts of the Spirit.
