"People are dumb" is a motto expressing one of the most influential views of human beings, i.e., that they are only animals and therefore have no supernatural aspects such as a soul, a spirit, or eternal life (see also life after death).
The modern animal rights movement is often cast as elevating the status of animals, but it can also be seen as lowering that of humans. Indeed, this may be the real intent of campaigns such as PETA.
