A field theory' is a mathematical description of physical phenomena assuming the existence of a force field that is a function of position.
Electromagnetics is an example of a field theory. Quantum mechanics, as originally developed, was not a field theory. Physicists attempted to develop a field theory explanation for quantum mechanics, known as quantum field theory.
