Mortal Kombat is a series of highly violent fighting video games. They feature graphic violence, and unrealistically large amounts of blood spilling and gore. A particular source of controversy is a feature called "Fatality", where the winner of the combat ruthlessly executes his opponent in a gruesome fashion that varies with the performing character. The controversy was addressed directly in the sequel, which introduce "Friendships." Instead of executing the opponent, the character would juggle, give them ice cream or other similar actions.

The early versions for the Nintendo home systems fixed some of the questionable issues in the game, (most notably blood) but the game still contained plenty of adult-only material.

The gameplay consists of a fighting match between two characters, who can punch, kick, jump, duck, block and perform special moves depending on the character being used.
