The Kuril Islands are chains of 22 primary islands & 32 small islets that are divided into three areas: the Northern Kuril Islands, the Central Kuril Islands & the Southern Kuril Islands. These islands sits on top of a geological composition called, Greater Kuril Ridge. These islands were once belonging to Russia, but were under Japanese control at the time of World War II. Russian seized them from Japan after the end of that War, and sovereignty over a portion of the islands remain in dispute.
