Eugène Louis Boudin (Honfleur, 1824 - Deauville, 1898) French Impressionist painter (a forerunner of Impressionism); specialized in maritime art. Wherever he went, he invariably painted harbor and beach scenes. Boudin participated in the first impressionist exhibition of 1874, and in the New York exhibition of 1886 organized by Paul Durand Ruel.
In the 1850s, Boudin met Claude Monet and did much to help the young painter find his true artistic self. In the 1860s he frequently saw Edouard Manet and worked with him in Boulogne and Deauville. (cfr: Eugène-Louis Boudin, Olga's Gallery)
Boudin played a critical role in promoting plein-air (outdoor) painting in France. [1] Camille Corot proclaimed Boudin "king" or "master" of the skies. [2]
The number of his paintings is estimated in 4 500.
