Combative UK talk radio "shock jock", he established his reputation for short-fuse libertarianism on local radio in Newcastle upon Tyne and Leeds in northern England, moving in the 1990s to the UK-wide TalkSport radio station. Despite an openly avowed scepticism towards religions of all kind, he provides a courteous if challenging environment for religious spokespeople on his late-night programme.
