Saint Methodius (815 - 885 A.D.) was a Greek scholar and apostle to the Slavs who translated the Bible into Old Church Slavonic. Both a missionary and a bishop, he was the brother of Saint Cyril and the two were sent together into slavic lands by the Byzantine Emperor Michael.
In 1980 Pope John Paul II designated the brothers Saint Methodius and Saint Cyril "Patrons of Europe"[1]
