Spore is a computer game designed by Will Wright, the creator of The Sims and the SimCity series. Wright has aspired to the creation of video games which mimic or replicate life, in an entertaining fashion, and the trend of the SimCity games was towards greater accuracy, realism, depth of control, and detail.

In this sense, Spore is a departure from the trend. In the game, the player takes control of a single cell, and guides the evolution of its species through a vast time span, eventually becoming an animal and forming a civilization, before exploring space through a UFO, with the ultimate objective of reaching the core of the galaxy to receive an item needed to defeat the Grox, the closest thing the game has to an ultimate villain.

The game was released in September 2008, and is available for Windows and Macintosh.

The "Creepy and Cute Parts Pack," a set of 60 additional parts for the Creature Creator, was released on November 18, 2008. The first full expansion, Spore Galactic Adventures, is scheduled for release in Spring 2009.

Spore and Evolution

There is an argument to be made that Spore supports evolution. Indeed, the objective of the game is to evolve your creature in such a way that it dominates the world. However, the precise methods used to evolve in Spore contradict the atheist theory of evolution in many ways, and the evolution process in fact resembles Intelligent Design, as it is entirely possible to reach sapience with a creature that would die out according to the theory of natural selection.
