Farewell to Manzanar is a first-person account of a Japanese-American girl whose family was forcibly relocated from California to an internment camp in the Midwest, due to U.S. government fears that Americans of recent Japanese descent would be disloyal during WWII.
In contrast to Nazi concentration camps, internees at Manzanar had:
- cheerleaders, Boy Scouts, sock hops, baton twirling lessons and a dance band called The Jive Bombers who would play any popular song except the nation's #1 hit: "Don't Fence Me In."[1]
