Occasionally a derogatory term used for someone with liberal political beliefs, the term "hippie" refers in fact to the anti-war movement spawned by the Vietnam War in the 1960s. Hippie culture was dominated by this theme, and the theme of rock 'n roll. Hippie culture also became associated with recreational drug use, "free love," although these associations were not held by every "hippy."
