Corn flakes is a breakfast cereal created by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg, a vegetarian and former Seventh Day Adventist who was director of the Battle Creek Sanitarium in Michigan. It was intended to be an anaphrodisiac foodstuff which reduced sinful urges in males (onanism). The Kellogg Toasted Corn Flake Company was formed by Dr. John's brother, William Keith Kellogg. W.K. Kellogg promoted corn flakes outside of the sanitarium and abandoned many of his brother's teachings, focusing more on the commercial aspect.
The company's experience during the Great Depression is a subject for teaching about economics.[1]
