Aleppo is a city in Syria, the next largest after the capital Damascus.
It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, having been occupied since around 5000 BC.
It is famous for its citadel, built by the son of Saladin, Ghazni.
During the Syrian War, Aleppo was the site of a bloody battle that saw most of the city destroyed. It's remnants are split between Bashar Al-Assad, and the alleged "Syrian democratic forces", with some suburbs under the supposed "Free Syrian Army"[1][2] proxy force control.
