Emir is title for nobility or high office, used in Islamic countries, meaning âcommanderâ or âgeneralâ (later it also meant âprinceâ) in the Arabic language. Also spelled "Amir," with the plural form of "Umara."
A country under the authority of an Emir is said to be an "Emirate". Modern examples of Emirates include Kuwait, Qatar, and the UAE.
