Ise Jingu (The shrine of the shrines) is the most sacred Shintō Shrine in Japan.

The Shrine actually comes in two parts. The Outer Shrine (Geku) is close to Ise-shi Station and is the less impressive of the two. The Inner Shrine (Naiku) is where the sun goddess Amaterasu is enshrined, who supposedly gave birth to the Japanese Imperial line and is Shinto's most significant deity.[1]

Constructed in the year 4 BC, the shrines are dismantled and rebuilt every 20 years (as part of the Shintō belief of the death and renewal of nature). The two shrines are located several kilometers apart from each other.
