A spontaneous mutation is an alteration in DNA that is not hereditary, and which arises as a result of natural or environmental influence on the cells.

If induced by an environmental factor, then it is called an induced mutation, which arises from the interaction of the DNA with a mutagen or outside agent.

Many spontaneous mutations are probably due to mutagens in the environment, but some are due to DNA replication errors.

It is highly controversial whether vaccination causes spontaneous mutation, with most pro-vaccination scientists denying it, yet it remains a mystery why a substantial percentage of victims of autism, Rett syndrome and similar conditions do not inherit their damaged DNA.
