Nicholas Breakspear (born 1100, Abbots Langley, England - d.September 1, 1159, Rome) became Pope Adrian IV of the Roman Catholic Church in 1154. His real name was Nicholas Breakspeare. He is the only Englishman to ever be Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He donated Ireland to the English monarch King Henry II in a papal bull because at the time the Irish Church was a peculiar Celtic brand of Christianity outside of Rome's control and he wanted to reincorporate the Irish Church into orthodox Catholicism.
