COBOL is a procedural programming language intended for business tasks. It's name stands for "Common Business Oriented Language". It has the virtue of being easily read if meaningful variable names are used. It was invented in 1959, but the specification was not approved and printed until 1960, hence the first version is known as COBOL 60. It has been enhanced since its inception to add features such as structured blocks.
