The Catholic Centre Party (''Zentrum'') was the last organized bulwark comprising a plenteous "liberal" democratic opposition to Hitler. However, the pact between right-wing clerical fascist (and later Nazi Party official) von Papen and Eugenio Pacelli (later "Pope Pius XII"), concurrent with the dissolution of Zentrum, handed the ultramontane fascist-reactionary faction over to the Nazis while leaving the liberal-democratic faction of political Catholicity without a platform to pose a formidable blockade to Hitler.
