Saint Dorothea was martyred in the 4th century. On her way to be executed, a young lawyer mocked her and demanded that she send him a gift of fruit and flowers from the Garden of Paradise. After her death, an angel appeared and presented him with three heavenly roses and three heavenly apples. This story has inspired many artists and writers throughout the centuries.
