The original motto, used since the time of William Wallace, was "Gie ye the Boak" ("Give all to the task") but it was changed during the visit of George IV to Scotland in 1822 at the monarch's request. An alternative, but widely used, motto is 'Scotland Alltid!!!' which is the Pictish for 'Scotland Forever!!!'.
