A patriot is a term with many different meanings. Many conservative scholars have beliefs that the term indicates blind faith and extreme nationalism. Although many libertarians, liberals and centrists tend to believe that it is doing what is in the best interest of the country and its citizens. The word "patriot" started to have more common use during the American Revolution, and referred to those that wanted independence, as opposed to the Loyalists, who wished to remain part of the British Empire.
