Bears are large furry mamamals from the family Ursidae. Most bears are carnivores, meaning that they eat other living animals, such as fish and people. 2005 was a "notably bad year for fatal bear attacks in Canada."[1]
There are eight species of bears:
- Polar Bear - lives in the Arctic maritime region and hunts (primarily) seals.
- Brown Bear - also known as the grizzly bear, because of its ferocity. Subspecies include the Kodiak bear and the European brown bear. Lives in temperate forested regions of North America, Europe, and Asia.
- American Black Bear - smaller than the grizzly, and lives in North America. Subspecies include the Kermode bear, sacred to the Indians, which lives in British Columbia.
- Asian Black Bear - an Asian version of the American Black Bear.
- Panda Bear - lives in China and eats a plant diet of bamboo.
- Spectacled Bear - a small bear which lives in South America.
- Sloth Bear - lives in South Asia and eats termites and honey.
- Sun Bear - a small bear which lives in Southeast Asia.
The American English word "bear" comes from Old English bera, meaning "brown and furry", which can be traced back to Latin ursa, as in Ursa Majoris, the Big Dipper.
The Chicago Bears is the name of a team in the National Football League.
