Leif Erikson (or Leifur Eiríksson) was born in Iceland in 970 and died in 1020. He was son of Eric the Red who was an outlaw from Norway. He founded two colonies in Greenland and it is generally believed that he was the first European to arrive in North America, in modren day Newfoundland (which he called Wineland). Erikson was a Christian convert, and spread his new religion to his colonies.
