The All England Club is the host to the prestigious Wimbledon tennis championships, one of the longest-running annual sports competitions in the world. Played on the expensive surface of natural grass, this annual tournament is considered the most coveted prize in the sport of tennis.
While there have been many winners of different nationalities and ethnicity, there has been only one African American men's winner: Arthur Ashe, in a stunning victory over the heavily favored Jimmy Connors. In the women's competition, the African American sisters Venus and Serena Williams dominated the tournament during the 2000s, winning nine titles between them, including four all-Williams finals, and four women's doubles titles as well.
