Avram Landy

Avrom Landy was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1904. After receiving a BA in German studies from Ohio State University and an MA from the University of Madison, Wisconsin, he began doctoral studies there. He left before finishing his dissertation in the 1930s to move to New York City to become city editor of the Daily Worker. He edited the paper for about two years, and then became Educational Director of the Communist Party of the United States, a position which he held until 1945. In 1945, he became copublisher of International Publishers, the Communist Party's publishing house. He remained copublisher until 1947, when he left the Party. He was theCommunist Party candidate for New York State Senate 4th District in 1941. Landy was identified by Elizabeth Bentley as a contact in CPUSA espionage.
