The South wanted to keep its slaves and lower tariffs. The South had the upper hand at the beginning of the war, but the North came out the winner. Slavery was abolished for the most part and reconstruction took over. One key battle and a bloody one was the Battle of Gettysburg, following which Abraham Lincoln gave his Gettysburg Address.
