Revision as of 13:00, December 11, 2019

Local control?

State officials are still saying the Education Department is looking over and criticizing their education plans, which does not seem like much of a shift toward local control of education.[1] --1990'sguy (talk) 11:43, 20 July 2017 (EDT)

Betsy DeVos and some members of Congress proposed and endorsed federal legislation that would give scholarships to private schools and other non-public school programs: 1,2,3 Arguments by supporters: 1,2 Arguments by conservative critics who believe the bill, if passed, would overreach on states' rights in the education sphere: 1,2,3 Other: [2] Either way, I won't add this to the article, at least yet, since this is a legislative proposal and (AFAIK) not an executive action or regulation. --1990'sguy (talk) 08:57, 11 March 2019 (EDT)

Irrelevant information removed

I just removed this info. Campaign positions/rhetoric is irrelevant to what Trump and his administration actually did in regard to education policy. The only exception is if/when we compare Trump's campaign positions/rhetoric to his actual policies as president, which the info I removed does not do, and what I think we can only really do after Trump's presidency is over (a president can keep campaign promises even up to the day their presidency ends). --1990'sguy (talk) 16:33, 16 August 2017 (EDT)

Campus sexual-assault regulations

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is proposing replacing Obama-era regulations regarding campus sexual-assault policy with something that will help students better: 1,2,3 Hopefully, this will succeed. --1990'sguy (talk) 23:46, 8 September 2017 (EDT)

DeVos's new rules on this will reportedly include due process for the accused: [3] --1990'sguy (talk) 22:46, 15 November 2018 (EST)
More on the coming new rules: [4] --1990'sguy (talk) 23:38, 15 November 2018 (EST)

Withdrawn conservative nominees

The Trump Administration withdrew Tim Kelly for an Education Department position due to a blog post related to Muslims he made in 2009.[5] Kelly is a conservative proponent of school choice, so it's ridiculous for the Trump Administration to do this based on this one thing. --1990'sguy (talk) 18:54, 9 November 2017 (EST)

Appointing Obama holdovers

The Education Department reportedly appointed several liberal Obama holdovers and other similar officials to Education Department positions: [6] If this is the case (likely so), then this is bad news. --1990'sguy (talk) 23:10, 26 March 2018 (EDT)

Other appointments

Here's an interesting article on Ken Marcus, the Trump Administration's Senate-confirmed appointee for the Education Department's civil-rights division: [7] --1990'sguy (talk) 14:23, 30 July 2018 (EDT)

Michelle Obama and school lunches

The USDA is taking steps to repeal regulations inspired by Michelle Obama that ordered schools across the country to serve and not serve certain foods.[8] The full repeal is scheduled to be completed by July 1, 2018. --1990'sguy (talk) 19:19, 22 December 2017 (EST)

"Cut down on food waste!" they scream, then force schools to provide food of such poor quality and variety that in some cases, not even adults would want to eat it. Then they are dismayed to see this food going to waste in schools...
Children don't always have the best diets, but that is on them and their parents. Schools should not be used by the federal government to control this. It's particular outrageous when they confiscate parent-provided meals and give the kids cafeteria food instead, to comply with Obama's rules. --David B (TALK) 11:06, 14 February 2018 (EST)

Transgender bathroom complaints

Apparently, the Education Department will not investigate complaints made by transgender school students about not being treated as if they were the opposite biologocal gender: 1,2,3,4,5 This is clearly good news, though I'm hesitant to include this since these reports are relying on a single statement made by a spokeswoman to BuzzFeed. --1990'sguy (talk) 23:30, 13 February 2018 (EST)

Yes, refusing to waste tax dollars n the political correctness agenda of the left id always a good thing. As even the liberals in had to admit, this doesn't in any way meant that gay students will be unprotected from bullying, it just means that the federal government won't be wasting time and money on claims which are usually a bunch of nonsense.
As for whether this should be listed, I can go either way. Even if the only source is one spokesman, it it probably credible enough. This does show a policy change, so it might be worth mentioning. This does not relate directly back to Trump, but it does show he make a good appointment to the DoE. --David B (TALK) 10:59, 14 February 2018 (EST)
I am now leaning in favor of adding this info -- I'll see if there are any more reports on this. The fact that it didn't come directly from Trump isn't of any concern, as this page shows achievements from the Trump Administration in general, as the intro paragraph states (if it weren't for Trump, these people wouldn't be in the DoE). --1990'sguy (talk) 11:20, 14 February 2018 (EST)
Added. --1990'sguy (talk) 23:18, 14 February 2018 (EST)
Another interesting article on this topic, though I probably won't add it because it's biased against the administration: 1,2 --1990'sguy (talk) 21:57, 18 August 2018 (EDT)
The Education Department will investigate a Connecticut school's pro-transgender bathroom policy as being discriminatory, something left-wing activists aren't happy about: 1,2 --1990'sguy (talk) 21:17, 14 August 2019 (EDT)

Here's an interesting overflow article about the Trump Administration rescinding that transgender directive last year: [9] --1990'sguy (talk) 23:28, 15 February 2018 (EST)

Common Core

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos falsely stated recently that "Common Core is dead."[10][11][12] While it seems that her statement was intended to gain support from conservatives, I'm worried that it shows that Common Core is here to stay and that many conservatives will be content with keeping it. If so, it's another example of conservatives surrendering to the Left. --1990'sguy (talk) 23:23, 19 February 2018 (EST)

A good video on this: [13] --1990'sguy (talk) 11:56, 5 April 2018 (EDT)

Proclamations

I don't know if this is significant enough to add to the article (I lean towards "no"), but it's still great that Trump proclaimed "National Charter Schools Week":[14] The Trump Administration is definitely more supportive of school choice than its predecessor. --1990'sguy (talk) 00:03, 15 May 2018 (EDT)

Regulatory/Deregulatory actions

Some interesting articles on some actions or proposed actions by the Trump Administration related to Education Department regulations: 1,1,3 --1990'sguy (talk) 14:23, 30 July 2018 (EDT)

The Education Department reversed some Obama-era regulations penalizing for-profit colleges: 1,2 Unless I find other sources on this, I probably won't add this, as it doesn't seem like a particularly significant achievement. --1990'sguy (talk) 23:12, 10 August 2018 (EDT)
Breitbart wrote an article about this, so I decided to add it. --1990'sguy (talk) 15:10, 11 August 2018 (EDT)
The Education Department will not try to delay an Obama-era regulation any longer: 1,2 --1990'sguy (talk) 23:53, 12 October 2018 (EDT)
More on court rulings (most likely by leftist judges) opposing the Education Department's deregulatory agenda: [15] --1990'sguy (talk) 14:02, 16 October 2018 (EDT)
DeVos reinstated a for-profit college accediting group: [16] This may not be significant enough to add to the article, but probably worth noting here. --1990'sguy (talk) 09:54, 22 November 2018 (EST)

Not a regulatory/deregulatory action (obviously), but DeVos criticized teachers unions, a good sign: [17] --1990'sguy (talk) 15:04, 27 November 2018 (EST)

DeVos canceled $150 million worth of student loans after a judge ruled against her on a policy: [18] --1990'sguy (talk) 10:26, 14 December 2018 (EST)

Many of DeVos's actions have been struck down by courts: [19] --1990'sguy (talk) 08:51, 22 March 2019 (EDT)

Budget

Trump's proposed education budget seems to be good, though it likely won't pass Congress: [20] --1990'sguy (talk) 08:51, 22 March 2019 (EDT)

Investigations

The Education Department is currently investigating a case of potential discrimination against men: [21] This article is focusing on the problem of anti-male discrimination, and doesn't mention the Trump Administration accomplishing anything, but it's still interesting to read. --1990'sguy (talk) 16:02, 19 November 2018 (EST)

The Education Department is investigating anti-Semitism at a consortium for the University of North Carolina and Duke University: [22] --1990'sguy (talk) 22:06, 26 June 2019 (EDT)
According to the Government Accountability Office, the Education Department only accepted 1% of applicants for some student loan forgiveness program funded and, apparently, started by Congress: [23] --1990'sguy (talk) 20:46, 8 September 2019 (EDT)

Missed opportunity?

This is an interesting article: [24] While it doesn't exclusively discuss the Education Department, it does argue that conservatives should take a more aggressive stance in promoting conservative views in the education system and, implicitly, that they and the Trump Administration are missing an opportunity. --1990'sguy (talk) 00:56, 2 December 2018 (EST)

School choice

There are some decent articles defending school choice: 1,2,3 I considered adding them to the article, but I probably won't since they really don't have anything to do with Trump or his actual proclamation. --1990'sguy (talk) 09:47, 25 January 2019 (EST)

Campus free speech

This seems like a decent op-ed on Trump pending campus free speech executive order: [25] --1990'sguy (talk) 21:58, 8 March 2019 (EST)

Hopefully, this pending order will threaten universities' research funds if they don't allow free speech -- this will apparently be the most effective way to enforce such an order: [26] --1990'sguy (talk) 13:37, 10 March 2019 (EDT)
It could be difficult determining which univerisites would be affected by such an order: [27] --1990'sguy (talk) 23:16, 11 March 2019 (EDT)
Trump is also considering an order related to student loans, though since this article is paywalled, I'm not sure if it would be part of the free speech order, which is also discussed in this article: [28] --1990'sguy (talk) 21:20, 13 March 2019 (EDT)
Trump is expected to sign the free speech order this Thursday, which would be March 21: [29] --1990'sguy (talk) 16:16, 18 March 2019 (EDT)
Some extra sources, all written shortly before the order was actually signed: 1,2,3 --1990'sguy (talk) 18:44, 22 March 2019 (EDT)
More sources: [30] --1990'sguy (talk) 22:15, 22 March 2019 (EDT)
Free speech restrictions are still a problem, though this isn't surprising: [31] --1990'sguy (talk) 21:58, 27 March 2019 (EDT)
Trump's order has high approval from voters: [32] Good news, though I won't add this since this isn't a popularity contest. --1990'sguy (talk) 21:25, 28 March 2019 (EDT)
Many college students still don't have full free speech rights: [33] --1990'sguy (talk) 16:14, 10 December 2019 (EST)

Student loans

The Trump Administration is proposing that Congress amend the Higher Education Act to impose limits on federal student loans: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 --1990'sguy (talk) 23:04, 19 March 2019 (EDT)

There's an apparent dispute between the Education Department and the CFPB over student loans: [35] --1990'sguy (talk) 08:18, 22 October 2019 (EDT)
DeVos canceled loans for 1,500 since she faced a lawsuit if she didn't do that: 1,2 --1990'sguy (talk) 16:06, 8 November 2019 (EST)
Students may get only partial loan relief under new rules by DeVos: [36] --1990'sguy (talk) 22:13, 10 December 2019 (EST)

Foreign money

The Education Department is investigating foreign money in U.S. universities: [37] --1990'sguy (talk) 21:16, 13 June 2019 (EDT)

Obama-era student discipline

The U.S. Civil Rights Commission, still dominated by Obama appointees, recommended keeping a left-wing Obama Administration school discipline policy: [38] Hopefully, the Trump Administration will undo it. --1990'sguy (talk) 22:08, 28 July 2019 (EDT)

Admissions regulations

The Trump DOJ apparently ended regulations on college admissions because they blocked competition: [39] --1990'sguy (talk) 22:37, 28 September 2019 (EDT)

Miscellaneous policies

Education Secretary DeVos announced $123 million worth in education grants: [40] This doesn't seem like a particularly significant action, so I probably won't add it. --1990'sguy (talk) 17:09, 2 October 2019 (EDT)

DeVos criticized the higher-education plans of the 2020 Democrat candidates: 1,2 --1990'sguy (talk) 11:58, 19 October 2019 (EDT)

Discrimination/Anti-Semitism

Trump will reportedly sign an executive order to combat anti-Semitism on college campuses: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 --1990'sguy (talk) 21:18, 10 December 2019 (EST)
