''Midnight Cowboy'' is a classic 1969 [[United States|American ]] film directed by [[John Schlesinger]] and based on the novel by [[James Leo Herlihy]]. The film is about two lost souls who form a friendship in the 1960s. The film was very controversial for its graphic sexual content, and the film received an "X" rating upon first release. The film won the [[Academy Award]] for Best Picture. (After the film won the Oscar, the rating was lowered to "R" without any cuts, although the MPAA claims that it was "edited for re-rating".) In today's morally corrupt society, this film would be considered to be extremely "tame".
