The perpetrators of the attacks were soon identified as members of the al Qaeda terrorist organization headed by [[Osama Bin Laden|Osama bin Laden]]. Motives for the attacks as defined by Osama bin Laden were supposedly American's foreign policy towards Israel, sanctions against Iraq and the consistent presence of American troops in the Middle east.

The September 11 attacks are often said to be a defining moment in modern United States history, and have had a variety of impacts on American society. Following the attacks there has been a surge of patriotism, particularly from conservatives, however the extent of the attack has also brought fear of further acts and loss of lives.
